Viasat Strengthens Commitment to Bring Digital Inclusion to Mexico; Begins Installation of Free Satellite Internet Wi-Fi at 75 Government-Selected Sites
MEXICO CITY, April 24, 2019Viasat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global communications company, today announced it is bringing high-speed, high-quality connectivity to more people across Mexico by setting up 75 government selected sites with free Wi-Fi access using its high-speed satellite internet service. Sites have been pre-selected by the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) of Mexico, and include schools, libraries, health clinics and other institutional locations that can help promote local e-commerce and the Mexican economy.

Viasat began to install the free Wi-Fi service in early April 2019, with sites already connected in Agua Azul (Lázaro Cárdenas, Quintana Roo), Nuevo Tesoco (Tizimín, Yucatán) and other communities across the region. The plan is to have all 75 sites connected within the next few months.

To celebrate the roll-out of this initiative, Viasat will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony with special local government officials in attendance. Details of the event include:

DATE:                   Saturday, April 27, 2019

TIME:                    10:00 am CDT

LOCATION:          Dimas Sansores – a local school in Agua Azul (Lázaro Cárdenas, Quintana Roo)—one of the first locations Viasat has connected under this initiative

Kevin Cohen, Viasat’s managing director, Global Community Wi-Fi commented, “There are too many critical government, educational, healthcare and business locations across Mexico that are still offline as the communities they are based in are internet-deprived due to the lack of mobile or fixed broadband coverage. At Viasat, we’re working to change that. With this program, we are proud to bring high-quality internet access to help more students, doctors, entrepreneurs and others to create new opportunities and economic value for Mexico.”

How it works

The Viasat satellite internet service is the highest-speed satellite broadband service in Mexico. Set-up of the service is straightforward: a satellite internet modem connects to the satellite dish on the outside of the government institution via a coaxial cable and then uses a Wi-Fi access point inside the building to extend the Viasat internet service among multiple connected devices. To gain access, users simply connect to the internet service through the Viasat portal.
